Melbourne-based jockey Luke Currie has previously competed overseas in Hong Kong, Singapore, Mauritius and Malaysia and he is now set to add New Zealand to that list.
Currie is booked to ride at Trentham on Saturday, taking up the opportunity to head across the Tasman to primarily partner last-start Group 3-winning mare Town Cryer in the G1 Mufhasa Classic (1600m) and Karaka Millions hopeful Too Sweet in a two-year-old race on the program, with both gallopers trained by Roydon Bergerson.
"Brad Taylor, who was at (Anthony and Sam) Freedmans for years, contacted my manager and asked if I would be interested in going for those two horses, Town Cryer and Too Sweet," Currie said.
"I said I was interested.
"Too Sweet has had one start and won an open two-year-old race. They're hoping that she can run well or win and are looking towards the Karaka Millions.
"And obviously Town Cryer's form has been good going into the main race."
Currie, who has won 13 G1 races in Australia, was happy to take up the chance to ride at Saturday's meeting.
"Especially having a chance in a Group 1," he said.
"And then, I've heard the Karaka Millions is an amazing meeting, so I would like to possibly set myself up to go back there again and then maybe open a few more doors, if I have a bit of luck, to possibly going back for some of the better meetings."
Currie said he had been in line to potentially ride at a New Zealand meeting years ago, but it never eventuated.
"Nothing has ever come up since, so I've never been (to ride in NZ)," he said.
"I'm looking forward to going.
"I've only been to New Zealand once. I went for my 21st birthday with some mates and we went snowboarding there.
"My wife is going to come for the trip with me. It was our wedding anniversary last week, so that's the anniversary present, I'll take her to New Zealand for a couple of days."
Currie said he has eight rides at Saturday's meeting.
Town Cryer heads into the G1 Mufhasa Classic off a last-start win over the distance and the seven-year-old was runner-up in the G1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes (1600m) for fillies and mares earlier this year.
"Town Cryer is a last-start Group 3 winner over the mile. She looks like she rolls forward and her form has been really consistent," Currie said.
"She only has to bring that form and she's going be competitive."
Currie has ridden 22 winners in Victoria so far this season and is hopeful of building some momentum into the summer.
He notched his first Group-race winner of the season last Saturday at Caulfield aboard Welwal in the G3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes.
"That was good," he said.
"I thought I had an ordinary spring, so hopefully now I can ride a few winners coming into Christmas and over the summer period."
